Folios 195 to 198 are out of order by mistake of the binder. There are also some defects on folios 104 and 105 with loss of some letters. There is a stain near the hinge on the final folios.

This copy that, besides the above mentioned defects, is complete, has the following typographic errors in the numbering like the digitalized copy belonging to the National Library of Spain, except for the change of 13 for 22..

Thus, the are the numbering errors: 17 (25), 56 (5/6), 80 (78), 104 (94), 116 (129), 124 (128), 132 (123), 136 (1?6), 148 (146), 152 (192), 153 (135), 150 (146), 170 (190), 178 (172), 194 (19?), 197 (19 with an inverted 7), 198 (298), and 219 (209).

Very rare second edition of this masterpiece of the world literature and the first Lisbon edition, published in February 1605, one month after the first Madrid edition, more valuable but less rare, published by Juan de la Cuesta. It also includes the passage of chapter 26 that was suppressed on subsequent editions and only is included in the first edition of Madrid. This second edition was already considered rare by Salvá in the 19th century and presently there are just 12 catalogues copies of both variants in libraries all over the world. There is no registered copy in Portuguese public libraries.

D. Quixote had five editions in the year of 1605 alone, two of them in Lisbon. This is due to the amazing success of the work, to the historical and political context of the Double Monarchy by the Filipes, and the cultural reality that was characterized by a wide-spread bilingualism of the educated classes in Portugal. The first edition in Portuguese was only published in 1796.

The Spanish printer Juan de la Cuesta got the privilege, in the name of Cervantes, for the kingdoms of Castile, on the 26th September 1604, and published his edition in January 1605.

The time elapsed between the granting of the privilege and the edition of the work allowed the spread of news about its value and enabled an enterprising bookseller from Lisbon, Jorge Rodrigues, to publish, totally legally, this second edition of D. Quixote, at the beginning of March 1605 (licences dated February 26th and March 1st) since Portugal was an independent kingdom, although ruled by the same king, and therefore the privilege of the first edition was not valid in Portugal.

Meanwhile the printer Pedro Crasbeeck, from Lisbon, seized the opportunity and published the third edition at the end of March 1605 (licences dated March 27 and 29, 1605).

Having heard of the Lisbon edition of Jorge Rodrigues, Juan de la Cuesta rushed to get a privilege for Portugal and Aragon (dated February 1605) and published the 4th edition in Madrid (May?). On that same year the fifth edition was published in Valencia (licences dated July 18th, 1605) at that time one of the kingdoms of the crown of Aragon that, due to the charters of James I in 1238, was independent from Castile, although, like Portugal, was also ruled by Filipe III of Castile.

Besides its value as a very rare copy and the fact that it is one of the first editions of this masterpiece of world literature, it is even more important for the study of the close trade and cultural relationship between Portugal and Spain.

How quick the Lisbon edition was published in a time of slow and difficult communications shows how the literary novelties spread and how the typographers worked, in an environment of high trade competition, to satisfy their customers who were well informed about what was going on in the Iberian cultural world.

This literature’s masterpiece has had a large number of readers since its first edition and has, since then, been influencing culture, thought, and arts all over the world. The two main characters are known worldwide. The universality of the work is rooted in the authenticity of its characteristics based on a gut knowledge and perception of Spanish culture. For a long time it has been considered a demolishing critique to the Chivalric romances, however modern reviews come to acknowledge the work as a tribute to those novels that had a strong influence in peninsular culture.

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (Alcalá de Henares, 1547 – Madrid, 22-04-1616), Spanish novelist, poet, and playwright, is one of the greatest literary genius of all times. Besides his masterpiece, he wrote many other works like short stories, short novels, theatre, and poetry, which on their own would have made him one of the greatest Spanish writers.

His life was very difficult and adventurous. After a duel in 1569 he fled to Rome. In 1571 he heroically participates in the sea battle of Lepanto, where he gets injured and his left hand disabled. In 1575 he is captured by Algerian pirates and is kept prisoner until 1581. Between 1581 and 1583 he lived in Lisbon to be close to king D. Filipe II and the Court. He is appointed Royal Commissioner in 1587 to take care of the supply of the Spanish Armada in Lisbon, and in 1597 he got arrested for debts.

In his works he shows several times his admiration towards Portugal and the Portuguese, and his description and praise to Lisbon are famous.
