Obra de referência sobre a porcelana chinesa de exportação armoriada destinada ao mercado britânico entre 1695 e 1820. Reúne e ilustra cerca de 2 900 serviços, identificando os respetivos brasões e famílias, e apresenta um estudo exaustivo sobre a evolução dos estilos, a produção da porcelana na China, o aparecimento da decoração famille rose e a valorização destas peças ao longo do tempo. Combinando investigação histórica, heráldica e arte decorativa, constitui uma fonte indispensável para investigadores, antiquários e colecionadores.

David Sanctuary Howard (Manchester, 1928 – West Yatton, Wiltshire, 2005) foi a maior autoridade mundial em porcelana chinesa armoriada do século XX e um dos mais importantes investigadores da porcelana chinesa de exportação. Dedicou a sua carreira à identificação, catalogação e estudo de milhares de serviços heráldicos, relacionando-os com as famílias para as quais foram produzidos.

Em 1962 integrou nas editoras educacionais E. J. Arnold em Leeds como diretor de exportação, 1973 abriu Heirloom & Howard, uma galeria de antiguidades em Mayfair (mais tarde mudou-se para Wiltshire). Em 1979, foi eleito membro do Sociedade dos Antiquários. Para além de antiquário, foi autor, curador de exposições internacionais e colaborador de prestigiadas instituições museológicas. O seu rigor científico e a profundidade da sua investigação continuam a fazer das suas publicações obras fundamentais para investigadores e colecionadores.

First and only edition. A second volume was published in 2003 by Heirloom & Howard under the same title. No second edition was ever published. The author dedicates the work to Cecil Henry Bullivant, F.S.A. The pages numbered in Roman numerals contain the printed dedication, a foreword by Sir Anthony Wagner, K.C.V.O., D. Litt, Garter King of Arms, a table of contents, and indexes of the colour and black-and-white photographs. An introduction by the author is included before the chapters, on the pages numbered in Arabic numerals.

Reference work on Chinese export porcelain bearing coats of arms intended for the British market between 1695 and 1820. It brings together and illustrates some 2,900 services, identifying their respective coats of arms and families, and presents an exhaustive study of the evolution of styles, porcelain production in China, the emergence of famille rose decoration and the appreciation of these pieces over time. David Sanctuary Howard (1928–2005) was the 20th century’s leading global authority on Chinese armorial porcelain and a foremost researcher of Chinese export porcelain. He dedicated his career to identifying, cataloging, and linking thousands of heraldic services to their original families. After working as an export director for educational publishers, he founded the antiquities gallery Heirloom & Howard in Mayfair in 1973, and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1979. Beyond his work as an antiquarian, Howard was a prominent author, international exhibition curator, and museum collaborator whose rigorous research remains foundational for scholars and collectors worldwide.
